MYPIE Gala shows off Miramichi’s finest

On Saturday night, some of Miramichi’s brightest residents got their chance to be on centre stage at an event created just for them. They got the star treatment, walking the red carpet, being interviewed and having their photos taken just like they were Hollywood stars. And for a night they were.

They were attending the Miramichi Young Professionals and Involved Entrepreneurs annual gala event. It’s a night where nominated entrepreneurs, professionals, community champions and new this year, the very best people’s choice nominees are honoured for the work they do every day.

A panel of judges selects the winners. As with most events, the one chosen is overwhelmed, surprised that they have won. There are the speeches and photos, but more than that, it is a recognition by their peers, and sometimes their competitors, of a job well done. The 2012 Entrepreneur of the year was Jason McCarthy. He opened his business, MIECON Services, two years ago in response to the closures of two businesses, both large companies. His company specializes in industrial and residential electrical and system upgrades. He told the crowd he had two options - open a business or relocate, something he didn’t want to do.

He has shown that with hard work and determination a new business can succeed in a region where things have been rocky for a few years. This is a family man who is active in his community, wanted to stay here and found a way to make that happen.

“I’m proud I can give back to the Miramichi - it’s provided so much to me over the years.”

He gave credit to organizations like Enterprise Miramichi which helped point him in the right direction for grants and financial programs.

Mr. McCarthy is a perfect example of what it is going to take to build the economy of Miramichi again. The other nominees in the same category, Claudia Bryenton of Forton Enterprise and Julie McCormick of Jules’ K-9 Boarding Services, are doing the same thing.

Minister of Public Safety and Miramichi Centre MLA Robert Trevors said it was up to the entrepreneurs to help rebuild the economy in the area, something he was confident would happen.

“We’re going to come back. We have the people. We have the resources.”

Mr. Trevors is right. It will take the people and the commitment from them to make it work. It has been said time and time again that one big company is not going to come in and save the region. Those days are gone and the sooner everyone realizes it the better.

And if it was any indication from the more than 250 people who filled one of the buildings at the Miramichi Exhibition than the region is more than on its way.

MYPIE president Dan Jardine told the Miramichi Leader the membership of the organization has doubled and the people nominated for awards were all good candidates

“The quality of the people is always very, very high,” he said

That was shown in the nominees and eventual winner of 2012 Professional of the Year. Adam Hambrook, who selected to receive the honour was nominated with Michael McCallum and Tyson Theriault, both of School District 16.

His story is how he took over the family business with his brother Skylar following the retirement and death of their father. He credited his success to the support of his family.

Hambrook’s story was recently featured in an Economic Outlook column submitted by Enterprise Miramichi. He told of learning of his father’s illness while still a university student and doing a lot of growing up in a short time. He faced a tough situation head on and proved he could operate the business his father had built.

MYPIE’s community champion of the year is Clarissa Harris-LeBreton. The coordinator of vision and health promotion with the CNIB, she has been involved in a number of community health initiatives over the years, including MANGO and women’s wellness programs. She also credited a supportive family for helping her succeed.

The newest award, the very best people’s choice award, went to Pat King. The active member of the Kinsmen club since 1995, he was a chair of the Portraits of Honour project. In his acceptance speech he said, “You can’t spell the word community without the word unity.”

King got it right and with winners and nominees like these working for Miramichi we shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
