Young Miramichi entrepreneurs and professionals gain training, recognition and business networking experience
By Shannon Daley

Miramichi Young Professionals and Involved Entrepreneurs (MYPIE) is a non-profit organization completely self-sufficient and self-governed. It targets the young people of the greater Miramichi region, from entrepreneurs, to professionals or simply civic minded individuals. Whether you are young at heart or truly 35 years old and under, MYPIE can provide support and information to you or simply enable you to have a voice in the region. All activities and events hosted by MYPIE are open to members and non-members.

The network of Miramichi Young Professionals and Involved Entrepreneurs was created and launched in September 2008 under the joint forces of Enterprise Miramichi and CBDC Northumberland. The idea was to provide a platform for the young entrepreneurs and professionals of the region in which to network, exchange and obtain information, recognize their efforts and have a voice within the community. Monthly business mixers were held from September to June and the network quickly obtained self-sufficiency through its fundraising activities. In May of 2010, the network obtained self-governance by electing an interim board of directors. MYPIE’s first annual general meeting was held in October 2010 and the board of directors for 2010-2011 were officially elected.  The board members included:  Joseph Foster, President; Daniel Jardine, Vice-President; Shawn Cripps, Treasurer; Shannon Daley, Secretary, Brian Geneau, Todd Chadwick, Steven Smith and Peggy MacLean.

MYPIE’s mission statement is “To provide support for young entrepreneurs and professionals through networking, training and recognition.” Events and activities for networking were hosted throughout 2010-2011 to fulfill this mission statement. These events included a business networking breakfast in October that highlighted a panel of local young entrepreneurs speaking on their success.  A comedy night event was held in November as a fundraising effort to support a family at Christmas through the Early Intervention Program. A roundtable discussion activity was held in December to enable board members to meet with their membership and gain ideas for activities and events.  A family sleigh ride event was hosted in February to give appreciation to our membership and their families while providing a networking opportunity. To celebrate summer, MYPIE hosted a BBQ and boat ride on the Miramichi River in June.  All events and activities hosted by MYPIE provide a networking opportunity for those in attendance.

To provide recognition to young entrepreneurs and professionals, MYPIE hosted its annual gala and awards ceremony in April 2011 with keynote speaker, Magz Schultz of Magzy’s Kettle Korn. The keynote address for this ceremony featured the success of social media marketing for the New Brunswick popcorn company and Schultz also shared his experience on CBC’s ‘The Dragon’s Den’ with the audience. Through an official nomination and judging process, MYPIE named its entrepreneur, professional and community champion of the year at the event. Scott Campbell of Incline Sports was named MYPIE’s Entrepreneur of the Year. Adam Hayward of School District 16 was named MYPIE’s Professional of the Year and Tracey ‘Chopper’ Robinson was named MYPIE’s Community Champion of the Year. Nomination forms for these awards are issued annually in February for the gala and awards ceremony.

MYPIE could not have hosted its networking events and gala awards ceremony without the help of many generous business sponsors throughout the year.  MYPIE has also received support from the City of Miramichi, Enterprise Miramichi and CBDC Northumberland for its events and activities.  MYPIE also thanks the community for its continued support of young entrepreneurs and professionals in Miramichi.

The organization did not officially host a training session in the past year due to time constraints but the board would like to host future training sessions and has gathered suggestions from its membership regarding the topics of training to be offered.  MYPIE continues to make its membership aware of business training events and activities hosted by Enterprise Miramichi, CBDC Northumberland and other business development organizations in the province.

MYPIE’s core values are: to be results-oriented, provide communication to its membership, have transparency and trust, have respect for youth, instil a sense of community and Miramichi pride, provide respect and professionalism, and be motivated to grow. These core values are respected at board meetings and events organized by MYPIE and are used to guide ideas for future events and activities hosted by the organization.

The organization also encourages high school and college students to become involved in its membership. MYPIE is pleased to announce that two college students in the Business Administration program at NBCC Miramichi have come forth to sit on the upcoming 2011-2012 board. Board members have also been working on potential partnerships and volunteer opportunities with high school students to get involved with MYPIE events and the annual gala and awards ceremony for 2012.

The previous gala and awards ceremony was organized, in part, by business students at NBCC Miramichi who contributed greatly to the success of the event while learning valuable skill sets for their future careers. MYPIE continues to work with the college students to learn from them and provide them with volunteer opportunities to meet and network with local businesses. It is hoped that these types of partnerships will encourage youth in our community to become involved in the business community and economic development of our region.

The network of Miramichi Young Professionals and Involved Entrepreneurs (MYPIE) will be hosting our second annual general meeting on Wednesday, November 2 starting at 5:00 pm at Pizza Delight restaurant located on 1670 Water Street (Chatham).  MYPIE extends an invitation to the annual general meeting to all and anyone interested in MYPIE and its activities.
